Image recognition for draft alt text is the most mature: models have gotten reasonably good at describing straightforward photographs, though they still stumble on charts, diagrams, screenshots of text, and images where the meaning depends on context the model can’t see. Automated ARIA labelling, which Wawsome applies, works best on common, predictable UI patterns like buttons, menus and form fields, and less reliably on custom-built components that don’t follow a standard pattern. Why human review still matters here
Every one of these AI applications produces a plausible-looking result that can still be wrong in ways that aren’t obvious without checking. An AI-generated alt text description can confidently describe the wrong thing in an image, or miss the specific detail that made the image relevant in context. An automatically tagged PDF can get the reading order subtly wrong in a document with a complex layout, which a sighted reviewer skimming the output might not notice but a screen reader user absolutely will. What to ask before trusting an “AI-powered” claim
When evaluating a vendor’s AI claims, a few concrete questions cut through marketing language quickly. What specific task does the AI perform, alt text, ARIA labelling, document tagging, something else? Is there a documented human review step, and at what point does a human check the AI’s work rather than it shipping straight through? And does the vendor publish anything about how the feature is evaluated or how accurate it actually is, rather than just asserting that it works? Tools that can answer those questions specifically tend to be more trustworthy than ones that lean on “AI-powered” as a standalone selling point.
